This paper presents the results of a Secchi depth data mining study for the North Sea - Baltic Sea region. 40,829 measurements of Secchi depth were compiled from the area as a result of this study. 4.3% of the observations were found in the international data centers [ICES Oceanographic Data Center in Denmark and the World Ocean Data Center A (WDC-A) in the USA], while 95.7% of the data was provided by individuals and ocean research institutions from the surrounding North Sea and Baltic Sea countries. Inquiries made at the World Ocean Data Center B (WDC-B) in Russia suggested that there could be significant additional holdings in that archive but, unfortunately, no data could be made available. The earliest Secchi depth measurement retrieved in this study dates back to 1902 for the Baltic Sea, while the bulk of the measurements were gathered after 1970. The spatial distribution of Secchi depth measurements in the North Sea is very uneven with surprisingly large sampling gaps in the Western North Sea. Quarterly and annual Secchi depth maps with a 0.5° x 0.5° spatial resolution are provided for the transition area between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea (4°E-16°E, 53°N-60°N).

From data collected by RV Polarstern, and additional echosoundings provided by national hydrographic offices, research institutions and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Digital Bathymetric Data Center, the 1:1,000,000 Bathymetric Chart of the Weddell Sea (AWl BCWS) series has been developed. The heterogeneity of bathymetric data and the lack of observations within ice-covered areas required the incorporation of supplementary geophysical and geographical information. A semi-automatic procedure was developed for terrain modeling and contouring. In coastal regions, adjacent sub-glacial information was included in order to model the bathymetry of the transition zone along the Antarctic ice edge. Six sheets of the AWl BCWS series in the scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the southern Weddell Sea from 66°S to 78°S and from 68°W to 0°E were recently completed and included in the 1997 GEneral Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) Digital Atlas CD-ROM (http://www.gebco.net). On the basis of these six 1:1,000,000 AWl BCWS sheets, a generalized 1:3,000,000-scale bathymetric chart was compiled for the entire southern Weddell Sea.

The general knowledge of the hydrographic structure of the Southern Ocean is still rather incomplete since observations particularly in the ice covered regions are cumbersome to be carried out. But we know from the available information that thermohaline processes have large amplitudes and cover a wide range of scales in this part of the world ocean. The modification of water masses around Antarctica have indeed a worldwide impact, these processes ultimately determine the cold state of the present climate in the world ocean. We have converted efforts of the German and Russian polar research institutions to collect and validate the presently available temperature, salinity and oxygen data of the ocean south of 30°S latitude. We have carried out this work in spite of the fact that the hydrographic programme of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) will provide more new information in due time, but its contribution to the high latitudes of the Southern Ocean is quite sparse. The modified picture of the hydrographic structure of the Southern Ocean presented in this atlas may serve the oceanographic community in many ways and help to unravel the role of this ocean in the global climate system. This atlas could only be prepared with the altruistic assistance of many colleagues from various institutions worldwide who have provided us with their data and their advice. Their generous help is gratefully acknowledged. During two years scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven have cooperated in a fruitful way to establish the atlas and the archive of about 38749 validated hydrographic stations. We hope that both sources of information will be widely applied for future ocean studies and will serve as a reference state for global change considerations.

In 2008, the 50th anniversary of the IGY (International Geophysical Year), WDCMARE presents with this CD publication 3632 data sets in Open Access as part of the most important results from 73 cruises of the research vessel METEOR between 1964 and 1985. The archive is a coherent organized collection of published and unpublished data sets produced by scientists of all marine research disciplines who participated in Meteor expeditions, measured environmental parameters during cruises and investigated sample material post cruise in the labs of the participating institutions. In most cases, the data was gathered from the Meteor Forschungsergebnisse, published by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). A second important data source are time series and radiosonde ascensions of more than 20 years of ships weather observations, which were provided by the Deutscher Wetterdienst, Hamburg. The final inclusion of all data into the PANGAEA information system ensures secure archiving, future updates, widespread distribution in electronic, machine-readable form with longterm access via the Internet. To produce this publication, all data sets with metadata were extracted from PANGAEA and organized in a directory structure on a CD together with a search capability.
